shooting rats

The poem Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump by David Bottoms is about a bunch of low-lifes wasting their life away. They are drinking beer and whiskey and shooting rats.. which isn't really doing anything with their life. In the poem they are explaining what the rats do when they get shot and it's also a comparison of what their lifes are like in a way. Sometimes I tend to feel like I just want to give up on school and not go to college. But then I think that if I slack off in school and don't go to college, i'll be wasting my life away. I think that the guys in this poem need to think about their lives and where it's taking them. To me the theme of the poem is to make something out of your life. In the lines "We drink and load again, let them crawl for all they're worth into the darkness we're headed for." (Bottoms), it's telling the reader that these guys know how they're going to live their lives and they're not really doing anything about it.
